Whats up with John Mayer?

I’m a fan on John Mayer, well not of him exactly but rather his music. In 2002 Room for Squares was released and I like many others became a fan. It was not to long after this though that people began to realize that there was more to Mayor than they expected and is wasn’t necessarily all good. Over the years I have lost most of my respect for him as a person but I still like him as an artist. Today when I logged onto MSN one of the headlines was Singer John Mayer Breaks Down on Stage, being curious and all I decided to read. Basically the article said that while he was n the middle of a performance at Nashville’s Sommet Center he decided he’d enough of all the drama he was causing and that he wanted to start back over and make it all about the music. He apologized to his band mates and the public in a very moving way but I still can’t help but wonder if he is really ready to change.
This article got me thinking about the “costs” of fame. Think about how many celebrities you know that are so wrapped up in themselves that all they hear is me, me, me. I realize that not all famous people are that way so what is it that makes some people keep it real when others drift off into a world of fantasy. I think it must be the person’s disposition in general and the fame just encourages it one way or the other. Look at Bono, talk about a giving guy who has done incredible things with his fame. Then there is the flip side of people like John Mayer who kiss and tell in Playboy. Who has the right though to walk on top of people at the expense of others – no one. We all grew up with the same golden rule – treat others as you want to be treated and yet stars often ignore that because they are special. You would think that being in the spotlight would cause these idols would do their best to set a good example but all you need to do is log onto US weekly to see a list of stars biggest scandals. I know that the media pressures them to be witty and clever and something bold and different but I think that there is a fine line between bold in a good way and in bad one.
Just maybe though John Mayer has had a serious reality check and is ready to change for the better. He did say, "It's just not worth being clever, I quit the media game. I'm out. I'm done. I just want to play my guitar." It does seem sort of ironic though that the man who wrote “Waiting on the World to Change” has fallen so very far.

  1. Well I have to agree with so much of this. It is sad to see a talented star get so wrapped up in thereselves that they lose contact with reality. The Bono thing makes me laugh because I think he is extremely self indulged but the reality is the world could use about a thousand more just like him. Dave Grohl said once in an interview that whenever life seems to be getting on top of him and he is losing touch with reality he just goes home to West Virgina and the people he knows will set him straight. I guess we all just need the right people in our lives.
